As school wraps up and summer plans form, it is the perfect time to curate a list of summer movies to accompany summer activities or watch on their own. Here is an overview of a few of my favorite quintessential summer movies to help set the perfect vacation vibe.
Mamma Mia
There’s no better movie to watch over the summer than “Mamma Mia.” Its beautiful Greek setting and warm energy make it the perfect option for casual watching or the background noise at a pool party.
“Mamma Mia” sets the perfect mood for a summer day. With the bright blue scenery and a dramatic storyline centered around the protagonist, Sophie, figuring out who her real dad is, the movie hooks viewers so that they won’t want to turn it off until the final credits roll.
This is one of my favorite movies to watch all year long. However, during the summer, I feel drawn to it because it combines an enthralling love story with ABBA’s energetic and heartfelt lyrics and a sunny Greek scenery. “Mamma Mia” is one of the few movies that never gets old, making it perfect to watch with friends or family, as everyone can enjoy it regardless of age or if they’ve seen it before.
The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants
“The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants” is an entertaining coming-of-age story about a friendship between four friends and a pair of magical jeans that fit them all. Throughout the summer, each character has different plans, so they send the pants to each other to stay connected.
Throughout each girl’s summer, they encounter challenging experiences, and the pants symbolize that they can each count on one another regardless of the physical distance between them.
This movie is a great reminder that school relationships can remain strong even over the long break, and it can even be an inspiration for a unique way to stay connected with friends during the summer. “The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants” is an amazing summer movie, and may be more enticing to watch as it takes place in Bethesda, Maryland.
The Parent Trap
Centered around two young girls who discover they are twins at summer camp and switch places for the remainder of the summer, the 1998 version of “The Parent Trap” is a captivating movie that follows both Hallie and Annie’s experiences.
A key theme of “The Parent Trap” is how Hallie and Annie become best friends despite growing up in very different environments and possessing vastly different personalities. Watching the girls’ relationship progress throughout the movie is endearing and leads viewers to want to stick around.
One of my favorite things about “The Parent Trap” is that while it is a captivating and enjoyable movie to watch, it is also the perfect multitasking movie, which is especially helpful during a time when one has the freedom to do many things purely for fun.
While these movies are all classics, the ideal time to watch each of them is during the summer. These are some of my favorites to watch while relaxing in the sun, and I highly recommend watching or re-watching all of these.
