Things to do this summer instead of being on your phone

Ways to fill time meaningfully in the coming months
Learn a recipe

Instead of just watching quick cooking videos on Instagram or TikTok, try making them in real life. This summer, try to learn one go-to recipe that can be made anytime. Cooking is a great way to force oneself to focus, be patient and creative. It also results in a delicious meal.

Cooking not only saves money, but it also tends to be a healthier meal than going out or ordering in. It is also something that can be shared with friends or family, whether that means making dinner one night or just showing off a new skill. By the end of the summer, anyone can gain a valuable skill that will serve them well for the rest of their life.

For those who are more athletically inclined, a great way to get some exercise during the summer is to start a weekly pickup game with friends. Text a group chat once a week and set a time to play. This can include basketball, wiffle ball or other sports, but the important thing is being consistent, getting exercise and having fun with friends.

Some weeks there might be a big group, and other weeks there could be just a few people, but it is still worth it. Over time, it becomes something people expect and look forward to, and it is also an easy way to stay active without being forced into a strict workout routine that can feel like a chore. By the end of the summer, memories will be made of fun games and time spent playing with friends.

Start a side hustle
Start a side hustle

Summer is a great time to start a side hustle and focus on it to make some money. Side hustles can include mowing lawns, washing cars, babysitting or any work neighbors might need. It is difficult to build a business overnight, but it’s important to do something productive with spare time over the summer.

Working teaches basic skills such as responsibility, time management and how to engage with people, which matter in life. Side hustles can take up a lot of time during the summer, helping prevent boredom and phone time. Side hustles can lead to spending a lot more time outside while also making money and helping others out.

Reading
Reading

Even though students are reading books all school year for various classes, summer is a chance to read without the pressure of assignments or deadlines. Instead of reading the book required by English class, pick a book that is genuinely interesting, whether that be a mystery novel, historical fiction or anything else.

Even reading for 10-15 minutes a day can make a big difference. It gives the brain a break from the constant time spent on screens, and it is a great way to relax, especially at night. Over time, it becomes easier to concentrate and stay engaged with activities. As more people get access to phones, fewer people enjoy reading for leisure, which is why summer is a great time to pick up interesting new books.
