With spring break coming to a close and the weather finally surpassing 50 degrees, we have officially made it to the peak of the spring season. While it can be easy to stay inside during the chaos of second semester, these are some ideas for unique spring activities that will make it worth it for even the busiest student to get outside.
Washington Nationals game
Nothing screams spring like a baseball game. One of the best ways to welcome in the new season is by heading over to Nationals Park in the Navy Yard neighborhood of Washington, D.C. and watching a Washington Nationals game. There is no substitute for sitting outside again after months of cold weather, eating ballpark food and feeling the energy of the crowd.
For baseball fans and people like me who attend games just to enjoy the vibes, spending a few hours with friends at a baseball game is the perfect way to take advantage of spring. With prices as low as $10-$15 for some games, watching a baseball game is an easy and enjoyable spring activity.
Go on a hike
While available all year round, I believe that the prime season to go on a hike is springtime. With flowers blooming along the paths and just the right amount of sunlight, a spring hike will never miss.
There are so many local trails to choose from, but some of my favorites are Sugarloaf Mountain in Dickerson, M.D. and Great Falls Park, which is located along the Potomac River in McLean, V.A. They both offer incredible views and a mix of trails of varying intensity. Sugarloaf is perfect for a chill hike while Great Falls has incredibly scenic overlooks with rushing water and cliffs.
The best perk of hiking is that it is either completely free or very low-cost, making it an easy and accessible way to get outside. Whether going with friends or alone, it’s one of the best ways to fully appreciate the pleasant weather and beautiful nature in the area.
National Harbor
Another perfect spring destination is the National Harbor, which sits just across the water from Southwest D.C. and Alexandria, V.A. waterfronts. While there, I recommend walking along the waterfront and grabbing a bite at Bombay Street Food or some rolled ice cream at Panda Tea House.
One of the highlights is riding the Capitol Wheel. 180 feet in the air, this Ferris wheel has incredible views of the Washington Monument and the Capitol Building. It is especially nice around sunset.
While some attractions cost money, just walking around and enjoying the harbor is completely free, making it an easy and fun way to spend an afternoon or evening outside.
Around The World Embassy Tour
A great advantage of living in or near the nation’s capital is taking advantage of events like the Around the World Embassy Tour. This year, it will be happening on May 2 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., giving people the rare opportunity to step inside different embassies and experience cultures from all over the world without ever leaving the city.
The event is completely free and takes place across multiple embassies throughout Washington, D.C., mostly along Embassy Row and the Dupont Circle area. This yearly event is extremely unique, with chances to experience a variety of cultural activities, such as petting alpacas, playing with robots and learning indigenous dances, making it an activity that cannot be skipped this spring.
