As online shopping continues to grow and big-name stores fill local shopping centers, finding something unique can be a challenge. Local shops, however, bring creativity and community into everyday shopping experiences. In the Greater Washington area, three small businesses worth visiting are Locally Crafted, My Big Finds and Olive & Loom. Each offers its own atmosphere and charm, making them great spots for gift shopping or a fun outing with friends.

Locally Crafted
Locally Crafted

Located in the Rio Washingtonian shopping center in Gaithersburg, Locally Crafted offers a cozy and welcoming shopping experience. The store is neatly organized, with shelves filled with handmade items created by local artists. Name cards sit next to many of the products, sharing the makers’ names along with their personal stories, adding a special touch to the experience.

The shop stands out for its wide variety of artisan goods, all made by local creators. From jewelry and candles to glassworks and even 3D-printed creations, the selection is diverse. There is also a strong focus on Maryland-themed merchandise, making it a great place to find locally inspired gifts.

When I visited, I was impressed by how thoughtfully everything was displayed. Many products are made using recycled or sustainable materials, and the care put into each item is apparent. Prices vary, with smaller items like earrings and greeting cards being more affordable, while larger ceramics or artwork cost more due to the time involved. Items like stickers and 3D-printed fidgets typically cost $4 to $6, while other gifts, such as hand-poured candles or ceramic mugs, range from $15 to $30.

While Locally Crafted may not have the fast-paced energy of a larger retail store, it is the perfect place to go for something meaningful and one-of-a-kind.

My Big Finds
My Big Finds

Located in the Kentlands area of Gaithersburg, My Big Finds offers a completely unique experience. From the moment customers walk in, the store feels full in the best way possible. The space is packed with antiques, vintage decor, clothing and statement pieces.

Originally starting as a pop-up shop in 2015, My Big Finds has grown into a local staple. The store carries a mix of clothing, accessories, home decor and gifts, with many pieces leaning heavily into vintage and antique styles. There are hanging chandeliers above racks of items, vintage typewriters on tables and rustic wooden furniture tucked into corners. Customers may browse through vintage vinyl records and graphic T-shirts that cost around $10 to $25, or might appreciate the unique home decor and one-of-a-kind jewelry with prices typically ranging from $20 to $45. A key characteristic of this store is that everything is for sale, from the mirrors hanging on the wall to the racks full of hanging clothes.

Personally, this store felt more like an experience than a quick shopping trip. True to its slogan, “hip, vintage, local,” the store fully lives up to that identity. While it was not completely my personal taste, I appreciated how unique it felt and how no two visits would ever be the same. Since many items are sourced in small batches or are one-of-a-kind vintage finds, the inventory is constantly changing.

Another unique aspect is that they focus on hiring local high school and college students. My Big Finds is community-oriented and even sponsors local Kentlands events. For those who enjoy thrifted treasures, antique vibes and the thrill of discovering something unexpected, My Big Finds is definitely worth a visit.

Olive & Loom
Olive & Loom

Located in Kensington, Olive & Loom offers a more polished shopping experience. The moment customers step inside, the atmosphere feels soothing. The store is carefully arranged with clean shelves, soft colors and a subtle scent that adds to the relaxed environment.

Blending Turkish lifestyle with American culture, Olive & Loom brings Mediterranean-inspired home and lifestyle goods to the area. The shop focuses on traditional, old-world items with a modern aesthetic. Customers can find textiles, bath towels, jewelry, clothing and even specialty food items such as olives scattered around the store. Many of the items have neutral tones and minimalist styles, which make them perfect for gifts or home decor.

Unlike the eclectic feel of My Big Finds, Olive & Loom feels simple and curated. There are smaller items like hand soaps and guest towels for $10 to $16, but the shop also offers higher-end gifts like their signature Turkish body towels and waffle robes, ranging from $50 to $120. While many items lean more high-end, the quality is noticeable. It feels like the perfect place to find a meaningful gift, especially since they also offer gift wrapping.

All three businesses bring something different to the area. Locally Crafted blends variety with strong community support, My Big Finds offers a bold and vintage discovery experience and Olive & Loom provides a calm and curated Mediterranean lifestyle feel. While each store has its own strengths, my personal favorite was Olive & Loom because of its peaceful atmosphere and thoughtfully chosen products. I would highly recommend visiting all three.
