Bowls around town

A look into the slop bowl craze in the area
Poki DC is a restaurant located within The Spot Mini food court in College Park, Maryland.
Poki DC

A good poke bowl spot should prioritize freshness and balance, and those qualities are exactly what makes Poki DC stand out to me. Located in College Park, Maryland, Poki DC is a restaurant within The Spot Mini, a food court housing several different Asian restaurants. Their bowls leave me feeling satisfied and healthy.

My bowl consisted of seaweed, green onion, mango, edamame, ahi tuna, sesame seeds and soy sauce. The base usually starts with rice or greens, then gets layered with raw fish, chicken or tofu, plus toppings and a dressing.

The ingredients are always fresh and tasty, resulting in a colorful, nutritious meal. Despite usually being hesitant to order raw fish from fast food places, I have no regrets about my meal. Compared to other bowl options, Poki DC feels lighter while still satisfying and filling.

Playa Bowls offers a variety of bases and toppings that can be customized based on personal preference.
Playa Bowls

Playa Bowls is a staple for when I’m in the mood for a sweet treat that feels energizing and refreshing. My favorite bowl there is the “Goldie Mango,” which is a thick mango smoothie base topped with granola, Nutella, strawberries and bananas. The fruit is always cold and fresh, complementing the granola’s crunch and the Nutella’s gooeyness perfectly.

One thing Playa Bowls does especially well is variety. Playa Bowls offers an array of options for smoothie bases, including coconut and banana bases, along with more unique options like the green bowl, acai or pitaya. Additionally, the toppings range from bee pollen and coconut flakes to cacao nibs and almond butter. Playa Bowls is a warm-weather staple for me, customizable based on whether I am in the mood for a fruity and refreshing sweet treat or a filling meal.

CAVA offers Mediterranean-style bowls with unique ingredients.
CAVA

CAVA is perfect for a Mediterranean-style meal that is easily customizable. The process is similar to other slop bowl spots, starting with a base like greens, grains or a mix of both, and then layered with proteins, vegetables and dips.

What sets CAVA apart is how much flavor is in each step. Unique toppings like “Crazy Feta,” “Fiery Broccoli,” falafel and “Hot Harissa Vinaigrette” dressing make CAVA a staple unlike any other, perfect for a filling and flavorful meal.

My go-to order is a white rice bowl with roasted white sweet potatoes, corn, persian cucumbers, roasted eggplant dip, traditional hummus, tomato and onions, topped with the “Lemon Herb Tahini” dressing. Although the ingredients were slightly out of proportion, with the sweet potatoes overpowering the rice portion, the overall flavors make CAVA my favorite slop bowl spot.

With generous portions and heavier ingrediants, Chipotle provides a substantial and comforting meal.
Chipotle

Chipotle Mexican Grill is hailed as the catalyst of the slop bowl trend and leans into comfort and customization. My simple go-to order is a bowl with white rice, black beans, cheese, lettuce, tomato and avocado.

The portions are generous, almost to the point of being excessive. Each ingredient complements each other well: the rice is warm, the beans bring substance and protein and the toppings add freshness as well as texture. What makes Chipotle stand out to me is its consistency. I always know what I’m getting, and it’s easy to build a bowl that fits my mood.

The ingredients are straightforward yet slightly heavier than poke bowl places or salad spots, which makes it appealing when I’m looking for something substantial rather than simply refreshing.
