Health and exercise science teacher Steven Forestieri sees tremendous value in team spirit. “[It] builds comradery and keeps them focused and mentally prepared for the game,” Forestieri said.

With the Lions down 15-7 in the first quarter of the PVAC boys varsity basketball championship game, senior Bryan Knapp shoots a layup over Sandy Spring Friends School junior Malakai Parker. Knapp finished with 40 points, leading all scorers.

CESJDS fans watch nervously as the Lions pull ahead by one point during the third quarter. The game was neck and neck throughout most of the second half, before they took the lead for good at the end of the fourth quarter.

Coach Dave McCloud (left, standing) and the Lions bench watch the tight fourth quarter. JDS and Sandy Spring were the two best teams throughout the year in the PVAC and the last meeting between the teams was heated and physical.

The players run onto the court as the buzzer sounds to make JDS’ championship official. The team had 24 wins and three losses, which gave them the top seed in the conference tournament.

Senior Bryan Knapp shoots and makes a technical foul shot as the CESJDS fans raise their hands in anticipation. Knapp is one of nine seniors on the team, and he will be playing basketball at Cornell University next year.

The JDS bench jumps with excitement as the Lions pull ahead with only seconds left on the clock. In the last minute, Knapp took over and the Lions ended up with an 11 point victory.

Seniors Bryan Knapp and Nadav Kalender hug following their championship win. Only three players on the boys varsity basketball team are underclassmen this year, so coach Dave McCloud will be coaching fresh faces next season.

After receiving the PVAC banner as boys basketball champions, the team gathered around the banner for a picture. It was an especially meaningful night for the seniors, who left for their senior capstone trip to Israel the next day.
