Exploring Navy Yard

Kaylah Goldrich, Sports Editor

The modern architecture gives Navy Yard a trendy feel. The buildings’ modern style mixes well with the old-school stone road that runs through Navy Yard, giving it a classic feel. The pedestrian bridge that crosses the Anacostia River stood out because of its unique architecture.

Navy Yard also offers many retail and entertainment options, such as the Trapeze School NY which provides both indoor and outdoor aerial training. There is a Lululemon store and a fun gift shop, called Steadfast Supply, which features products made by many small businesses.

The opening of Nationals Park transformed the surrounding neighborhood into a vibrant area with apartments and restaurants. Its proximity to Audi Field, home of the D.C. United soccer team, and Nationals Park makes it a very convenient spot to dine or hang out on game day.

Navy Yard has a wide variety of restaurants that cater to many food preferences. I opted for Swizzler, a hamburger restaurant. My burger was cooked to perfection, and their ‘Signature Sauce’ perfectly complemented the meat. Navy Yard also has other restaurants including Yellow, a Levantine-inspired cafe, and Osteria Morini, an Italian restaurant.

Jubilee had a wide variety of ice cream flavors, but I opted for their vanilla ice cream which was the best I have ever tasted. It was creamy and delectable, but not too sweet. After attending Nationals or D.C. United games where you may be sitting in the sun for hours, this ice cream shop is a convenient and refreshing stop for your post-game pick-me-up.

Not only does Navy Yard have exceptional places to dine, but it is also a great place for D.C. tourists to take in the relaxing waterfront views, including the newly-constructed Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge. There is also an option to kayak across the river, which is a fun, kid-friendly activity.

Unlike many parts of the city, Navy Yard has plenty of green scenery. A turf field in the center of town is a great place for many neighborhood activities, including outdoor yoga. There is also a great picnic spot near the riverside with a wonderful view of the water.
