Senior Brandon Portnoy and junior Max Schwartz stand in the front of the student section. JDS students were loud all night as they cheered on both the boys and the girls teams. “It was electric…,” Portnoy said. “Half the battle is the fans.”

The JDS student section holds up “magic fingers” while the Lions were at the free throw line. This is a superstition which is believed to help the players make their free throws. Both sides of the crowd were going at it all night, which can both help and hurt each team. “Credit to [Berman], they have a big crowd,’ Cohen said. “Overall we were able to weather in and we did okay.”

Head coach Becky Silberman talks to her players during a timeout. In basketball, timeouts are used to help players regroup, especially after getting scored on repeatedly. “Berman going up early was tough on us but we let up a storm and we played a hard game,” Cohen said.

While the Lions played hard, Schwartz thought they could have improved on their overall communication in the 54-47 loss. “It was really hard to hear each other with everything going on [in terms of the crowd],” Schwartz said.

The team’s starting lineup huddles together right before tipoff. “It is always tough coming into your rival’s gym and trying to win on the road,” assistant coach Matt Cohen said. “We came out hard, we came out and battled.”
