The boys varsity basketball team is off to a hot start, having won their first three games.

Last Tuesday, they defeated Grace Brethren 72-65 Sophomore Daniel Kuhnreich led CESJDS with 26 points, while sophomore Bryan Knapp had a double-double with 22 points and 14 rebounds.

According to Knapp, the Lions owe their past win to their offensive strategy, which has remained consistent through their first three games.

“We ran a more spread out offense,” Knapp said.

Knapp went on to describe the other aspects of the team’s strategy that proved to be successful. Knapp elaborated on how they utilized the court by moving the ball better. This was done through passing during fast breaks and by being aware of who to pass to complete the play.

The Lions have averaged 62 points a game and 23.3 rebounds per game this season, with Knapp and Kuhnreich playing a crucial part in this success. Knapp leads the team in averages for points, rebounds and assists with 22.7 points per game, 9.7 rebounds per game and 2.7 assists per game, while Kuhnreich averages 17.7 points per game.

According to head coach David McCloud, the team will need its young leaders to step up for the team to have future success.

“We have three sophomores that lead our team: Bryan Knapp, Nadav Kalender and Daniel Kuhnreich,” McCloud wrote in an email.”They have to grow up quickly in order for us to reach our goal.”

“We really just do want to win the championship,” Sophomore player Josh Abramowitz said.
