Laughter. Lust. And lots of confusion. As Shakespeare’s shortest show, The Comedy of Errors has slapstick humor and is a must-see at the Shakespeare Theatre. The play launches into a complex plot about lost family members and misunderstood identity. I would recommend reading an exposition before seeing the play because the background is quickly told in the opening monologue.

The plot focuses on two sets of identical twins separated at birth, during a storm. The plays highlight the themes of chaos, broken family, and ultimately a wild goose chase. Shakespeare brilliantly used dramatic irony to keep audience members at the edge of their seat.

The actors showed loads of energy and were able to keep the audience engaged. They were able to bring an ancient play to life. In addition, the set was unique with its revolving stage

This modern interpretation of the play used thoughtful music and choreography to contribute to the comedic aspects of the piece. In specific, the cast put on a riveting tap number that seemed out of the ordinary for a Shakespeare show.

The play puts emphasis on the impacts of a broken family. Without love and cohesion, families will ultimately spiral into chaos. Keeping in mind the thoughtfulness of Shakespeare’s other work, it is evident that The Comedy of Errors lacks depth; yet, the play certainly proves Shakespeare’s comedic abilities.

The Comedy of Errors is playing at the Shakespeare Theatre until Nov 4. Ultimately, I would recommend this play for its vibrant plot and energetic cast.
