New high school students gain head start on school year

While some returning students spent their final day of summer at the beach or by the pool, others spent it helping incoming students get ready for a successful year.

High school orientation was held on August 28. It included many activities which helped integrate new high school students into the JDS student body, such as meet-and-greets with faculty and administrators, a personal student buddy for the new students, a tour of the building and a question and answer session.

Both students and faculty at JDS understand the importance of integrating new students into the student body as quickly and easily as possible.

“Some of them might not know a lot of people or they might not know about the schedule or anything about the school, so it’s a good thing to make them comfortable,” freshman and student buddy Oren Minsk said.

High School guidance counselor Rachel Soifer stressed the importance of starting to familiarize new students with the rest of the student body before the first day of school.

“It’s really important that when they come for the first day of school that they know somebody and that we can make them as comfortable and welcome as possible,” Soifer said.
