How many times have you been watching a movie and been letting hoping for a continuation of the story? Here are five movies that need sequels.
“Big Hero Six” – 2014:
Following the adventure of a science prodigy Hiro and his robotic sidekick Baymax, on their quest to solve the mystery of Hiro’s brother’s death, “Big Hero Six” builds a futuristic and visually appealing world, populated with a cast of quirky characters who are uniquely loveable. The movie’s ending leaves the viewer wanting more from the world they have just been immersed in, with the narrative arc of Hiro’s character growth not being entirely completed, with Hiro still having room for emotional growth. A sequel could quench the thirst for more of the world and characters. You can watch “Big Hero Six” on Disney+.
“21/22 Jump Street” – 2012, 2014:
After the release of the second installment in the hit “Jump Street” buddy-cop high school comedy series, a continuation seemed inevitable. The chemistry between the leads Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum was still present, even in the series’ second outing. There was so much more that the series could do with its over-the-top action and strange brand of comedy. The end credits of “22 Jump Street” even go as far as to tease the idea of a third installment in the series, with the characters at different kinds of school, like medical school and law school. But this never came to fruition, despite the wealth of sequel ideas that the series could explore. You can watch “21 and 22 Jump Street” on Netflix and Max.
“Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World” – 2010:
“Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World” is an incredibly unique film with its comic book and video game-inspired atmosphere and colorful cinematography. “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World” follows the story of disgruntled 20-year-old Scott Pilgrim while he tries to begin a relationship with a new girlfriend. The film is a show of the greatness of the film medium with the music, cinematography, direction and writing working together to create an incredibly fun environment that leaves the viewer wanting more. The end of the movie ties into this, with it leaving plenty of room for a potential sequel, things like the future of Scott and Ramona’s relationship still have plenty of room to explore. You can watch “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World” on Max.
“The Peanuts Movie” – 2015
When the popular comic strip “Peanuts” was announced to be made into a movie, there was initially a lot of backlash. However “The Peanuts” movie ended up being the ultimate rebuke to this criticism, leaving the audience only craving more. The film’s unique animation style paired with the comic-accurate depictions of Charlie Brown, Snoopy and the other Peanuts pleased nearly everyone watching. The jokes and general feel of the movie make it an incredible comfort watch for the viewer. This comfort is much needed with the hectic nature of the modern world, and a sequel would be an excellent way to revisit these characters and comfort. You can watch “The Peanuts Movie” on Max.
“Blade Runner/2049” – 2017, 1982
Although it was already a sequel to the original “Blade Runner” film “Blade Runner 2049” presented many new questions for the viewer. Taking the audience back into a dystopian future populated by semi-human beings referred to as “replicants” and replicant-hunters referred to as “Blade Runners.” The “Blade Runner” films serve as a scathing commentary on modern artifice and politics. As our world becomes more polarized, artificial and political, the commentary made in “Blade Runner” becomes increasingly relevant, making it a perfect movie to continue with a sequel. The cliffhanger ending of the film even hints at a sequel, making a continuation of the film seem almost necessary. You can rent the “Blade Runner” films on Amazon Prime Video.
