As a huge fan of Olivia Rodrigo and her album “GUTS,” I was excited that she was coming to DC during her “GUTS” World Tour. To my dismay, the concert would take place while I was at camp, meaning I couldn’t attend. When I saw on social media that there would be a filmed version of the tour on Netflix on Oct. 29 I couldn’t wait to watch it.
Many fans have had similar experiences in which they were unable to go to concerts of artists they love. For this reason, it is great that Rodrigo decided to film her tour so more fans could be able to see her perform.
The film did not disappoint. It showed the immense joy of the concert atmosphere and provided an easily accessible way to see the concert for those who were unable to go in person.
The concert was filmed in Los Angeles, and the recording was beautifully done with short behind-the-scenes clips from before and after the concert to draw people in, and some graphics on the screen during outfit changes to keep viewers engaged.
During the concert, Rodrigo played 23 of her most popular songs from her newest album “GUTS”, along with some from her record-breaking debut album, “SOUR”. Some highlights from the set list were “love is embarrassing,” “get him back” and “favorite crime.”
The most attention-grabbing performance of the concert was “brutal,” the opening track from her debut album “SOUR,” because it is an upbeat song that featured incredible visual effects on the screen and in the arena. During this song, Rodrigo danced with her band members and showed the fun of performing to viewers of the concert.
One attribute that made this movie so fun to watch was that it is clear that Rodrigo loves performing. This evident passion is carried even through the screen and adds to the appeal of this movie.
Another highlight of the concert was the encore section in which Rodrigo sang a few more of her biggest hits to close out the performance. This section of the concert was really exciting because there was a lot of dancing, movement, lights and visual effects.
The most shocking part of the movie was when Rodrigo invited fellow pop singer Chappell Roan on stage. The two of them performed Roan’s song “HOT TO GO,” which complemented Rodrigo’s voice very well.
It might have been beneficial to bring this movie to movie theaters similar to “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,” rather than Netflix, because it is so much fun to connect with other fans when watching the movie. Overall this movie is a very good watch, and is a great option for those who did not get tickets for the “GUTS” World Tour.
