Girls varsity basketball positioned for success

After putting the finishing touches on a dominating 56-8 win over conference rival Washington Waldorf — their second win in two days — the Girls Varsity Basketball team was finally able to relax and rejoice as they started the season 3-0.

The Lions won the PVAC Championship last year, and almost all of the players that lead them there have returned this season.

“We’re satisfied with the start to our season,” assistant coach Aaron Bregman said. “We only lost two seniors from last year, and have the defending league MVP in Daphne Lerner (Lerner leads the PVAC with 20.3 points per game this season). Sophie Kader is another huge threat, but to be honest I’d say our entire top five have potential to be the best players in the league.”

Bregman has reason to be satisfied with the team’s start, as the Lions are leading the PVAC in points scored with 150 and point differential, having outscored the competition by 77 points this season.

Junior Evie Kraner, one of the team leaders in steals — averaging 1.3 steals per game — echoed Bregman’s sentiment.

“Our goal is to win another championship, and with the team we have that is definitely possible,” Kraner said after the Lions 56-48 win over Grace Brethren on Tuesday. “We also have a lot of seniors, and it would be great to send them out with a second straight championship.”
